Top 10 Quarterbacks Entering the 2024 NFL Season
1. Patrick Mahomes
What can be said about Mahomes that hasn’t already been? He’s a three-time Super Bowl champion in his first six seasons. A couple MVPs, a 5,000 and 50 year. All before the age of 29. If you don’t have him as the best quarterback in the league, hand over your “I Know Ball” card.
2. Josh Allen
The playoff success hasn’t come for Allen the same as it has for Mahomes, but his skills put him at number two on this list. Last season, the Bills finally gave Josh Allen a competent offensive coordinator who valued a run game. They went 6-1 after that with their only loss coming in a shootout against Philadelphia. Allen finally won’t have to play “hero ball” and I’m excited to see what that looks like.
3. Joe Burrow
If Burrow could stay healthy, he’d probably be ahead of Allen, but durability has to count for something. When he is on the field, he’s incredible to watch. In his first full season in the league, he took Cincinnati to their first Super Bowl since Reagan was in office. With his two top receivers returning once more (and probably for the last time), the Bengals will be trophy hunting again with Burrow under center.
4. Lamar Jackson
Electric. Human highlight reel. A linebacker’s nightmare. These are just a few ways to describe the most fun to watch quarterback in the NFL. The knock-on Lamar was always his passing. Obviously, that’s a fairly large part of the game for a quarterback. It’s only been getting better and better though as the years go on. In 2023, he threw for 500+ more yards than any of his previous campaigns, leading the Ravens to a 13-3 record (in his starts). However, he has to get rid of the playoff yips if he wants to sit higher in the rankings.
5. Matthew Stafford
Stafford is in the last few years of his career, but getting paired with McVay has helped him tremendously. A Super Bowl winner just three seasons ago and a playoff berth last year tells us he hasn’t heard any bell yet. He might not have the stats of some of these other guys, but when you need a big play, he’s your guy. I trust him more that any quarterback mentioned below. Now with a super-star rookie wide receiver in Puka Nacua to go with Cooper Kupp (and honestly a good, young defense), he has the pieces to make one or two more late career runs at the biggest game in sports.
6. Jalen Hurts
He should be thanking every god imaginable that Philadelphia fired Brian Johnson and replaced him with Kellen Moore. A guy that was able to get Mike McCarthy a contract extension. I’m very excited to see what Hurts looks like this year fully healthy again. I think we can all agree the end of last season was a fluke and not who Jalen Hurts actually is. He will return to form and get the Eagles back to the Super Bowl in 2024, mark my words.
7. Justin Herbert
Herbert’s stock has taken a dip the last two years and rightfully so. But his savior, Jim Harbaugh is ready to fix everything wrong with the Los Angeles Chargers. Harbaugh was able to get J.J. McCarthy drafted 10th overall, so I can’t wait to see what he does for a guy with actual talent. I don’t expect much from them this year as they’re clearly rebuilding, but come 2025 and on, this pairing should be special.
8. Dak Prescott
A lot of you probably think Dak is too high on this list, but what he does in the regular season is too great to discount. Yes, he threw a lot of picks two years ago. But he came back last season and led the league in passing touchdowns. We all might love to hate him, however between September and December, he’s an elite quarterback.
9. CJ Stroud
CJ Stroud was a man among boys last year. He led a rejuvenated Texans team to a playoff win over last year’s number one defense with 274 yards and 3 touchdowns. I’d still like to see more from him and that’s why he’s not higher on this list. I see his production dipping a little in 2024, mainly because I don’t think he can sustain the 4.6 TD:INT ratio he had last year. But with a wide receiver group including Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell, it shouldn’t dip by much.
10. Jared Goff
I’m sure I’m one of the few people who has Jared Goff in the top 10, but this ranking is more about me not being able to find a replacement for him. Love hasn’t played enough good football, Rodgers is decrepit, Lawrence has vastly underperformed. Don’t get me started on Tua. Goff is coming off back-to-back seasons of 4,400+ yards and 29 touchdowns. A case could be made his stats are heavily padded at home. I don’t argue, but all that means is he carves teams up on his own field. Goff is a baller and it’s time people put some respect on his name.
